105 vs Ultegra front

New frame build, transferring my existing groupset. I'm going to have to get a new front derailleur as my current 105 one is band on when the new frame takes a braze on.

It looks like the Ultegra version is only about £5 more than the 105 version. Is there any reason not to get the Ultegra version? Will it work just the same with my 105 shifters?

I will probably be upgrading it all to Ultegra eventually, as bits wear out.

There's not much difference, most of it is in the surface finish.

I went for the 105 on my good bike which is Ultegra otherwise and front shifts are perfectly fine.

IMHO the pivots on Ultegra are better then 105 - closer to Dura Ace, I run all three and noted Ultegra shifts better for longer whereas 105 wears out quicker....for £5 its worth it !

Ultegra shifts far better on the front than 105, certainly faster and more accurately. Just got Ultegra on my new build and the difference is pretty amazing.

not much in it but for an extra £5 it's a no brainer

Thanks peoples ;). Just wanted to make sure there was no daft compatibility issues with the Ultegra mech and 105 shifters :)
  • I run Ultegra shifters with a 105 rear mech and Ultegra front. I noticed that the front mech now requires far less effort to change than when I was running the old 105.

For the extra £5 do it !
Hey, maybe you haven't been keeping up on current events, but we just got our asses kicked, pal!
  • I mirror the above comments, I have both on different bikes and Ult feels quicker, easier and smoother.
