i've been trying to install a star nut, ive got the first half in but the top bit just isnt going into the top of the tube

i've put a small screw driver through the thread and i'm hitting this with a rubber hammer. i'm hitting it pretty hard but dont want to damage the forks.

any tips?

Screw an old bolt into the threaded bit and tap that with a metal hammer. Start gently and if it won't budge then try a bit harder.

Bend the flange up a bit so it slides in a bit easier? I used the end of an old broom handle to bash my last one in.

Knock the star nut down a bit then!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Buy, beg, borrow, or steal the PROPER tool.

Do a search on Google "star nut DIY tool"

A lot of good advice to avoid a trip to LBS or buy an expensive tool to use once.
