Almost certainly a dumbass question, but if I wanted to use the above, what hardware alterations would I need to make on a 9spd 105 setup?

You'd want some brake levers and some friction based bar-end shifters, such as the dura ace ones, plenty about s/h as well.0

Thanks for that, am I on the right line with an item such as this?

And as you have alluded, the only shimano gear lever option is dura ace?
Seem to only be a handful on the bay of e.
Are they non indexed, ie like an old downtube shifter?Felt F70 05 (Turbo)

That's the right sort of thing yeah.
Dura ace shifters are indexed (rear mech shifter only) but I believe they were indexed only for 10 speed, you can turn the indexing off though and run them as friction (yes, like an old downtube shifter) for your 9 speed no problem at all.
Im not familar with the other Shimano bar end shifters Im afraid, someone else will no doubt comment for you though.
Or make a post on http://www.timetriallingforum.co.uk/ where a lot of people live and breathe this stuff, then you can get the right information really quickly. Hope that is of some help.0
