Compatibility of new groupset

Hello,
I have just purchased a new groupset for a long tour. I got the sora 3400 3x9 shifters, sora 9 speed rear derail and triple front derail. My question is, what size of rear cassette would be best, and more importantly, what chain set? I will be carrying heavy equipment, so preferably I would want something smaller than 50/39/30, but I don't know if I venture into MTB chainsets, will the rest of the components be compatible?
Cheers.

As long as it's a 9 speed chainset then all will be well.
Cassette size depends on rear derailleur tooth capacity. According to Shimano, Sora derailleurs will run 11-27. So depending on what chainset you get you should be able to get a pretty low gear with a 12-27 cassette. Some people say that they'll actually take a few more than Shimano claim so you may get away with an 11-30.0 -
mtb chainset should be fine as should an 11-30 on the back0
