No. I'm 6'2" & 15st4 at the moment. OK, I go better on the flat than uphill, but doesnt stop me trying.

No. I'm 3ft 6 and weigh 18st - my nickname is the human butt plug, actually I think that would be my nickname no matter what my size - so just get out there and enjoy the weather with your brother - all else will follow.

6ft and 18st here, longest one day ride, 178 miles. I might not be quick but getting out is the important bit.

If you do enough mileage you're going to loose some mass.. but unfortunately you're never going to challenge the skinny guys on the hills - something you'll just have to accept!

But like me you'll be great on the descents lol

Not at all ... 6'5" / 16st5 here. Flats are fine, downhills are great and hills can be more challenging. On club rides everyone tries to get behind me to draft - unfortunately us big guys don't get the same drafting benefit fom the smaller riders. :D

Absolutely not. Have a read of this http://39stonecyclist.com/.
  • I started a year ago @ 5ft 10in and about 15stone 7 lbs. I have always had a muscular build (rugby forward). I have reduced that weight to 13stone 3lbs but the muscle is still there so I will never get down to 11 stone or whatever.

What this means is that despite doing a lot of hard, hilly miles, I am "middle of the pack" when it comes to big hills because I carry 20-30 lbs more than a climber of similar height. I'm decent on the flats and rapid downhill.

You're fine. You're climbing will improve as you get fitter but unfortunately, like me, you'll never be really quick. You will improve on flats as your fitness improves, your physique shouldn't be a major hindrance there

'Kin ell all you 'strong men' and rugby forwards are puny and narrow ;-) I'm 5 ft 10 and 16.5 stone - I did used to powerlift and prop-forward a little admittedly.

Longest ride I've done is 200 miles-ish (300 km audax) - going up to 400 km next weekend. I can climb - albeit slowly -but you will struggle to beat me on descents and I'm no slouch at sprinting on the flat. You are no way too big - don't worry about it. Train up and you'll be whipping his butt on the sprints :D

  • No, your not too big.

    I`m 5`11" @ 17.6 (down from 18.3 last month) ex-weightlifter.
Baggie shorts are a god-send for me

The hills kill me also, on the flat i can hold a pace at high teens, downs high twenties and hills single digits.

As above. 6' 3" and flip between 16-17 stone. Hills hurt, but on the flats and downhill I'll keep up with my mate who's Cat 3.

both my riding buddies are over 6'3 and a reasonable weight. Personally, I thought being tall was an advantage, isn't Wiggo over 6' ? Though I here he is barely over 10st. I'm interested in how you can quickly lose muscle mass?

Never to big to be a roadie.

We do a well known chaingang in Bristol which go's at a silly pace sometimes depending on who shows up. Most of riders who destroy people on that are built like elephants.

I'm 6'3" and about 19st come down from over 20 in the last 6 months. Flats I'm pretty quick at, descents I rock at, hills I can manage with the right gearing, but I'm getting quicker, probably middle of the pack. My aim is get down to 16 while keeping my power, as I need this for other sports. I'm never going to be the quickest up the hills but catching the people on the flats and descents that climb past you still puts a smile on my face.
  • Yes I am afraid so.

I started back in June last year at about 14.5stone was 16stone 2lb the Christmas before that! I am now 12st 12lb at 6 ft 2inches.
If I cut back on some treat food and concentrated on clean living even more I would sit at 12stone 3-6lb comfortably.

I am ok on the climbs got a few top 10 on strava same for the flat and descending I don't tend to go all out.

Been cycling again for 2 weeks after a 27 year layoff. Loving every minute of it. Spent the intervening years doing this:
    Aged 20 - 5 ft 9" weight 10st 6 lbs - wirey and fit (last time on a bike)
20 yrs pass - take up bodybuilding and get to a peak weight of 17s 3 lbs. Squat 600lbs and Bench press 460 lbs.
Last 7 yrs - stopped bodybuilding - weight drops to 15 st 7 lbs, still with a lot of muscle. Pull ups, press ups + 2 hrs a week exercise bike ... yes I know : (
Now - Muscle memory keeps the amount of muscle mass I have to a high level, which will make it impossible to get very light again, so my plan is to combine different elements of exercise where cycling is a major part of it. I plan on dropping weight gradually to 13 st 7 lbs , improve all aspects of my cycling performance, and keep my Bench press to above 300 lbs. To me that would be a very lean bodyweight and would allow me to become a better cyclist. For me I plan to use a bodybuilders dedication to become a fitter, well rounded athlete/cyclist even at an age in the late 40s.

2 weeks cycling and the distances are increasing and the average speeds are increasing. Bodyweight has dropped to below 15 st and i can see cycling as being a significant part of my life in the future. good luck all you 'heavies' : )

Why are people who "hop" not allowed in cat 4

Surely you meant to say beginners not incorrectly spelt "hopers"
