Hello,

I have been going through some stress to try and replace a groupset on an old bike. Thing is I am doing it as cheap as possible for a round the world tour. I am about to purchase these items, could someone so kindly advise me whether it will work, and if so, which ratio options are best.

Shimano Sora STI 8 speed 3300 shifters.
Shimano Sora HG50 8 Speed Road Cassette - Options; 12-21, 12-23, 12-25, 13-23, 13-26? Which One???????
Shimano 2300 Rear Mech - 8 Speed (Older version)
Shimano 2300 8-speed Front Derailleur - Triple
Shimano Tourney FCM171 Crankset - Which ratios will work with what I am intending to get though?

Hope someone can help this cause!!!

Cheers.

Of your selection, I think you might get chainline issues with the crankset (47.5mm) and the front derailleur (45mm), ie the FD won't be able to reach the biggest ring on the triple. To be absolutely certain that it will work, choose a road crankset or a CX FD.

If I were you I'd build a cyclo cross-ish bike with a very wide and low gearing for all of the extra equipment you'll be lugging around with you.

    To be specific:

-Shimano Sora STI 3x8 speed ST-3304 shifters
    -Shimano HG50 8 Speed MTB cassette 11-32T
-Shimano or any other (7/8/9 speed) road triple front derailleur
-Shimano Alivio RD-M430 or Deore (RD-M531, RD-M591) long cage rear derailleur
-Any non Campagnolo (eg Shimano, FSA, Truvativ, SRAM, Sugino, Stronglight etc) square taper compact road triple crankset (30/39/50T) or touring triple (28/38/48T)
  • Right, that is an option I may look into actually. Tell me this, purely because I can easily get my hands on them for a very good price, the sora sti 8 speed double 3300 - what other components would you use with them?

    Cheers
