New bike..... Iffy gears?

Guys,
Picked up my new road bike yesterday, boardman team carbon ltd edition, took it out for 20 miles last night and was getting frustrated with the gears.
While on the large front wheel the chain was noisy and took and age to shift up and sometimes I had to double shift to get it to change gear.
Is this normal? Part of the running in process?
If not dies any one have any suggested fixes?
This is my first new bike and first road bike.
Thank you.

Gear cables will stretch (well outers shrink a little) so it's normal to a point, either pop back and ask them to give it a quick re-tension. Or put it in the bottom gear at the back and change up a gear, stop look at the gap between the chain and the cog and increase the tension by winding the barrel adjuster towards the bike until it's inline and change gear again. If it still undershifts add some more tension, if it over shifts release the tension a bit by turning the barrel adjuster away from the bike.
Or do you mean your using two clicks to move the front derailleur? If so it's normal as that's the trim function to allow less rub on the front cogs.0 -
Sounds like the gears haven't been correctly adjusted - take it back to Halfords and ask them do it properly.
Above post is unclear - you need to unscrew (anticlockwise) adjusters to increase the cable tension, particularly if the upshift is sluggish. However, correct fitting and alignment of the front mech is most critical and suggest getting an expert (sic) to look at it first.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -

Although don't discount the fact that Halfords could have made a **** of itYou've no won the Big Cup since 1902!0 -
Another possible cause is that the High gear limit screw for the front derailleur isn't set correctly. You could try slacking it off a little, but there is a slight risk that you could over do it and end up with the chain coming off when you chain gear.0

as above, sounds like gears not adjusted properly - take it back.
20 miles is not long enough for cables to stretch and gears to go out0 -
Are you saying that the problem is changing between the small and large rings at the pedals or that the changing at the rear is taking ages when using the large ring at the peddles?Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S
