Hi guys

Been looking at building a new set of wheels, not going be anything amazing due to budget.

they will generally be used for trail centres (cannock, llandegla etc)

Looking at the following rims

DT swiss 445d
Superstar XC430
Mavic XM119
WTB Frequency i 19 (look a little light at 385g and a little thin for my weight)

im not a light rider being over 16 stone so was looking at your opinions. which rims to get or any other that are recommended? tempted by the stans rims but they are a little out my price i think.

Thanks

I'm running Stan's Crests on my Anthem and Flows on the SB66, both on Hope hubs and they have been great:

    Budget?

Why just rims? What hubs are you using and what spokes?
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

the bearing in the hub on my SOS rims died taking the axle and hub with them so ive decided to look at getting new wheels. thought after i built a few cheaper wheels up for mates and my other bike i would have a go at building a good set for mine.

i havent speced the hubs or spokes properly yet but looking at superstar hubs with dt swiss spokes/nipples.

budget am not really sure but want to keep spend lows but still have a half decent wheelset at the end of it.

Usually you'll struggle to build as cheap as you can buy (makes no sense of course), why not just get a pair of SS built wheels?

SS rims are made by Mach1 and rebranded (or at least they were!)

i have been looking at superstar wheels, im still undecided on what to do, buy complete or build.

ive seen the merlin deal here

    http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/w ... ms-26.html

But the hubs get mixed reviews and not sure on what the weight would end up as the hubs are pretty heavy

Good deal, the Shimano hubs are great, but they are worth regreasing before fitting......

My M475 (bought used) hubs have done 3000miles totally trouble (and maintenance!) free miles.

The Stans rims on offer from Merlin are both on the XC side of things. The 355 rim is a bit stronger than the Olympic and should be OK for wheels on the ground type riding around trail centres.

If you're looking for bomb proof then might want to look else where.

I was looking at the same Merlin ZT355 build (among other options), but I'd rather have a little more weight in exchange for more bomp proof-ishness (I'm a new rider, trail centre type stuff but do like to get wheels of the ground where I can - I think that's how I've broken my current rear hub). You'd steer clear of the 355?

You don't need any more than a light XC rim for stuff like Cannock. People seem to under estimate how much abuse rims can take, the strength is more in the build than the rim anyway.

I've never seen Cannock, but it's rough and rocky up here at places like Stainburn and Gisburn - tough northern geology.

Cannock is very tame. I have no idea how it got graded as a red trail, green would be more accurate.
Even for tougher trail centre stuff you don't need any more than a well built XC rim. AM rims are built to handle alpine stuff, way beyond what you will find at trail centres. My Mavic XM719's are strong enough for most downhill tracks, even at race speed.

Depends on your riding style and weight. If its mainly trail centres you ride at then it'll cope fine with the size of drops and jumps you normally see and cope especially fine at Cannock.

I probably didn't word it correctly, its not a fragile rim by any means, just making the OP aware that is not super strong as they made a comment about their weight.

Have a look at this for guidance on stans rims:

    http://www.notubes.com/ZTR-Rims-C18.aspx

The 355 is similar to the Crest rim.

I'm a lightweight (sub 9 stone), riding style clumsy newbie with hardtail, so lots of bashing over stuff, rather than any finesse. Stainburn and Gisburn are both rough and rocky terrain.

Should be no probs for you . I'm 90kg and been riding my crest rims for years. taken them to peaks / lake / wales many times and they've been fine.

I've completetly trashed rims hitting small rocks. Depends if you clout stuff! Saying that, for XC riding and average weight I'd be looking at 717 rims or Stans Crest.
