Bike build!

Hey everyone!
First post. Been cycling a long time, but only just started to take it a little more seriously.
I'm knocking around on a Specialized Tricross, which is too small for me.
Started commuting 10 miles a day this year, and I have done a few sportives.
Got me a place in the London-Surrey 100 so trying to train up for that.
You can see me on strava here

Anyway .... time to build a faster bike. I should mention its a big task for me to take on this because I only half know what I'm doing with the bike mechanically. I just picked up a Felt F95 frame of ebay for not much. It's my size! So first things first ..... I need to get the forks on.
hmmmmm which order do these rings on the headset go in?
Do i need spacers too?
Any help massively appreciated :P

1. Take the top "washer" off the steerer tube
2. Take the top bearings off the steerer tube
3. Put forks into frame
4. Put top bearings back onto steerer tube
5. Put top "washer" back onto steerer tube
6. Put spacer on steerer (if required)
7. Put stem on steerer
8. Tighten top cap bolt (should be a star nut inside the steerer tube)
9. Tighten stem clamp to steerer

crown race that you have on top of the two bearings goes at the bottom
you have the bearings in the right order, top bearing goes in once the forks are in the frame. should normally be a split spacer that looks like the crown race goes in next, then the headset top, then spacers and stem to go on the steerer to just above the height of the top of the fork, then the top cap.
those bearings could do with a clean/regrease and it those are the only 3 bits you have of the headset, i'd buy a new one as you'll get fresh parts plus the bits you are missing. from the look of it a 1 1/8 integrated headset (available for £10-£20-£40)

edit: that's assuming the crown race is on the top and it's not the split spacer. do you have the crown race underneath the lower bearing already?0

Chiwowzers! Thanks for the responses everyone. That diagram REALLY helped.
Right so the plan for now
- clean up the headset
- regrease
- buy a stem and some spacers
- screw together
I'm planning on getting pretty basic used parts from ebay, just to get the bike rolling. Then I'm going to replace bits week by week will I've got a proper road bike.0 -

I'll check0 -
good diagram - key thing - ensure spacers/stem are taller than fork steerer0

That's what I've got for a headset.
Are stems all standard? Road stems fit road bars? I realise they are different lengths to make your bike fit better. But ... I just want to get it rolling then get a bike fit at a later date.0 -
In your picture, from left to right, you have what looks like:
Conical headset top cap, compression ring, crown race, bearing seal, bearing, bearing, bearing seal.
Put the crown race on the forks (th other way up), put a bearing in the lower headset cup of your frame and put a seal on top. Put your forks on. Put a bearing in the upper headset cup, put a seal on. push the compression ring down, then put the conical headset top cap on top. Your headset should now be assembled.
You then need to add a stem and possibly some stem spacers. You need a stem to fit a 1 & 1/8th inch steerer tube. They come with various size bar clamp diamters. 31.8mm is the most common size nowadays.0 -

Put the crown race on, but the other way round to how it is in the pic, put the bearings on, put a seal on, put the frame on, put the other bearing on, put the other seal on, put the stem/spacer-combo on, put the compression jobby on, then the top cap???0 -
Yes, I think so. But compression ring should go straight after "the other seal". Then its the conical top cap. Then your stem (when you get it, add stem spacers if needed) then screw on the top cap.0
