I'm building up a new bike. I'm just trying to work out the best sequence for assembling the chain and rear derailleur cables, ie should I fit the cables to the shifters and the derailleur before fitting the chain or after?
Its shimano 5700 stuff if that helps. Thanks for the advice.

if you do the cable first it will be easier to size the chain using the small/small big/big method, otherwise it doesn't matter

Thanks, yes I was thinking of using that chain sizing method.

I would probably assemble chain on small sprocket with RD aligned using the limit screw, then tighten up the cable to the RD.

You only need to make sure the chain won't rip the mech off in the big/big combo.

Cables go on last. Fit them only when you're ready to muck about with indexing, and you're not going to be doing that until the chain is on.

Oily bits first...last 2 stages of bike build are cables and finally handlebar tape (with clean hands)

Easier to thread cable through shifter when they are off bars though. Set limit screws on rear-mech without cable attached or chain on - easier to line up derailleur cogs with cassette sprockets this way.

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

small/small is to ensure the chain isn't too long and rubs on the rear mech

Thanks for the advice. I think I might as well fit the chain first, after lining up the derailleur with the cassette cogs as suggested above. I've come to a bit a halt with fitting the cables as I found that there are lugs at the top end of the diagonal tube which are threaded and seem to need something in them to hold the cable outers. I have ordered some barrell adjusters now so hope they fit here....don't think the bike is going to be ready by this weekend!

You can only have one size of chain, unless you stop and take out a few links when you're going to use small/small?

If the mech is the right one the OP just needs to ensure that it's not going to get ripped off if he/she accidentally goes big/big.
