Best bang for your buck

So I am gentley browsing the bike market......

Looking for the best bang for my buck in the TT bike market but seem to have lost touch with the best deals around.

Planet X was my first port of call having ridden a Stealth for several hundred miles in RAAM but looking at the current specs and prices I think they are flogging a bit of a dead horse now - quite expensive for such a cheap frame and the builds are a bit odd. The Exocet is tempting but is getting into biggish budget at the top end once you customise the build a bit. We used to be able to get trade deals on PX but can't anymore - it's hard to pay X when you know you could have paid a lot less a year ago....

The Canyon 9.0 AL Speedmax looks pretty good (except for the Reynolds clincher wheels - Id rather just whack a pair of tubs on) but I am scared to buy a Canyon for fear of them doing some awesome promotion a few weeks after I pull the trigger - I also would prefer carbon natch. They have a few carbon Speedmax frames in the clearance for around the £1k mark but then the issue becomes build - sourcing the bits separately is probably going to be fairly costly particularly for a TT bike.

So am I missing some bargain manufacturer/deal? Let me know!

If you need wheels I have a pair of 808 tubs, brand new, going cheap....

The stealth fram is £300 at the moment.

Whats your sort of build cost spectrum?

    Cheapy cheap cheap...

Erm it depends how many of you lot book onto our Milk Race weekend in October, but around £2-2.5k but if possible less. I am more than happy with picking up second hand bits and bobs.

The frame price isn't bad but it's a bit wibbly wobbly and a Stealth frame with 808s might raise a few eyebrows!

What's the score with the 808s?

What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?

Have a look at the Boardman AirTTs. For 2-2.5k you can get the 9.0 fully built. However, in the long run you might be better off with the 9.8 frameset (the only one in the range sold as a frameset) at £1700 with other bits and bobs sourced and bolted to it.

There's usually a selection of P2C/P3Cs on ebay at any given time. May be worth a look.

That said, if the objective is cheapy cheap cheap I'd probably go for the Canyon. And then not look at their website for the next 6 months.

Hadn't considered the Boardmans actually - I'll take a look thanks.

Cervelos don't really do it for me - I hear they are pretty unstable when using aerobars

V tempting but the problem is I have a Paligap trade account so can get the FFWD F9R set for silly cheap. I don't like them as much as the Zipps but for the price its hard to look elsewhere...

Nevertheless, anyone who sees you on a Cervelo will assume you're a triantelope, even if you do know how to ride it; is that really what you want?

It is all part of a plan to ride from Essex to our base in the Pyrenees next year as fast as possible so it is technically a commute

i saw a guy commuting on a fuji tt bike the other night, skin suit and aero helmet. jumped a red light in central london. It was too late for him to have been going to a race. i was shocked and disgusted

Ok - I'll have a think about the Zipps - would need permission from the Chancellor before green lighting.

Haha bizarre - maybe he's starting an urban TT craze?!

That frame's a beauty - sadly you need to order five before the big discounts kick in so its out of reach I am afraid.

Cycling Weekly, for many weeks now, have been listing the Boardman Air TT 9.2 as being on offer at the Bike Factory (£1,899 instead of £2,699). (http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/buyandse ... l#factory3 )

I have just clicked through (http://www.thebikefactory.co.uk/product ... ctid=63561) and there's no sign that this is the case but might be worth a call to the Bike Factory and see what the deal is.

Hate to shatter your dreams, but apparently it's as stiff as a bowl of overcooked spaghetti, and the very latest aero frames are no more draggy. Does look cool though!

I recently picked up a cheap Argon18 E80, its a great bike for the cash and makes me wonder what the more expensive models in the line up are like. They do well in comparison tests and are well worth a look.

Next up I need to invest some money in getting a proper fit on it as I've noticed in the general messing around that I've done, that TT bikes are quite fit-sensitive. I moved the aero extensions a little and despite putting out more power was 30s slower on our club 10 course. Other people were setting PBs so I don't think it was the conditions.
