Evening all,

I'm off to Atur Stiniog in a couple of weeks, anyone got any tyre recommendations?

Also is it true that you have to wear a FF helmet for the red run?

Ta.

I don't understand the 'which tyres for xx' threads, I just did it on my standard tyres (Conti Mountain King) and was fine, know lots of people who just did it on their normal riding tyres. I'm assuming you don't have a DH bike as you're asking about FF :P

I saw people riding blue and red with open face but I wouldn't recommend it, there are some rough rocky sections on the red, having an off on those without a FF would be pretty risky. Personally, I wouldn't ever ride DH without a fullface, for what they cost it isn't worth the risk.

Only on the blacks do you need a ff, but knee pads and the usual kit are the very minimum I would wear, a ff as Tudj says will be a lot safer regardless. I just used my normal tyres, Hans Dampfs and had a single puncture with an XC tube, but any decent tyre should perform well enough. Better to spend the cash on a ff if you don't already have one

I wear FF on pretty much everything - i find it improves confidence

Edit: by everything I mean anything even slightly downhill.

Id honestly get a FF lid. landing on your face and replacing all your teeth is gonna cost more than a good lid.

Ive got a 661 shifted comp, recommended online and it seems good to me. only 55quid.

    Haha, wow.

I was asking about tyres 'cos pretty much everything I read about AS mentions sharp slate, slashed tyres and needing lots of grip. Currently I'm running Minion DHF 2.35 on the front and Ardent 2.25 on the back.

Buuuut, you've all pretty much convinced me that a new helmet is a better buy.

Those tyres will be fine. Yes I'd get a full face if I were you and knee pads at a minimum.

Put more air in your tyres than usual I got 2 snake bites but no jagged rock ripping punctures

possible stick some thicker tubes in as well. as it's uplift the weight will make no differenece, but will give more protection against snake bites.

re: tyres, not tried antur stiniog, but i've surevived places like wharncliffe with that combo fine

mine were with DH tubes so they didn't make that much difference

Was there last saturday, doing all 4 tracks on hans dampf with light inner tubes, BUT, running decent pressures ie 35ish psi and all was absolutely fine. Friends were on basic nobby nics and ralphs etc, and they both chucked more air in and were fine too.

Definately go with the full face though, especially if you want to have a real bash at it all.
