Play in Shimano cassette Zesty 314

Got a rattle coming from the rear of my 2011 Zesty. There is excessive play on the cassette, more than 1.5mm, despite the lock-ring being tight. Removed the lock-ring and the cassette from the freehub. All looks Ok ie no obvious mechanical damage but there is acres of clearance between the rings of the cassette and the freehub.

1.From experience can anyone tell me if a new cassette is the likely solution or is it likely to be both wear on the cassette and the freehub?
2. The existing cassette is a 9 speed Shiamno Deore HG61, will a 9 speed XT M770 be compatible?

Thanks in advance

and the wheels are? and the hubs in particular.

cassettes dont wear where you are having issues.

    Mavic hub?

When was the cassette fitted, has it been OK and then suddenly gone lose or has someone messed with it?
