Critérium du Dauphiné isn't a crit

Why is the Critérium du Dauphiné called a criterium when that usually (according to my possibly misguided understanding) means a short circuit race not a stage race?

Similar question applies to the Tour Series.

Critérium doesnt necessarily always translate into "circuit race"... originally, in French, I think it comes from a type of "competition". The common usage in cycling circles (pardon the pun) is of course the well-known "round-the-houses" format of a race. ...

random guess with probably zero truth......its a short version of the TDF? as for the Tour Series...because Tour means lap in French ie.Tour de France=Lap of France. and the Tour series has rounds all over the UK...just my take on them

It's just a name. The same company runs the Dakar Rally - a race which doesn't go within 4000 miles of Dakar.

Used to be called Dauphine Libere after the newspaper which originally founded the race, ASO bought it a couple of years ago and obviously as Dauphine Libere were no longer involved changed the name slightly. The Dauphine remains so its obvious its still the same race, but just renamed race to remove the newspaper's exposure I guess.

The race is a circuit of the Dauphine region, broadly.

    Seems fairly apt.

You get Criterium International too, plus various others.

    Babylon translates criterium as Rally...

Etymologically speaking it's got nothing to do with a particular type of bike race, just as a tour can mean a trip round an old chateau

Well it's not incorrect to say it lasts for 4 days, just incomplete...

    Where exactly does Paris-Roubaix start?

And enough of this Critical Dauphine stuff, how on earth did the Free the Dolphin race get it's name?

Why do the French think a 2 week holiday (14 days) is the same length as a 15 day holiday?

    Since 2010 it is.
Le Dauphiné Libéré is a famous regional French newspaper, and organized the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré (now known as the Critérium du Dauphiné) cycle stage race after the ASO took contol in 2010.

The historical capital is Grenoble and the other main towns are Vienne, Valence, Montélimar, Gap and Romans-sur-Isère.
    Its inhabitants are called Dauphinois.

This race was always a 6 day race and 7 stages (until the UCI interfered) and it got confused with people turning up to watch an indoor track race so they changed it to the 4 Jours de Dunkerque. Q E D.
I've been with it into Picadie and a wet afternoon TT stage in St Quentin and also to Amiens.
