Hi
I need to replace the bearings on my rear Specialized Roval PAVE 700c wheel. Im a bit of a newbie to buying bearings, will there be a generic set of bearings i can buy or will it be a specific type and size i need? The wheel has sideways play so i believe this or a new hub should sort the issue. The wheel is second hand so i dont have any more information to hand, unless i can glean it from examining the wheel (i.e. if it has more specific model information written on it.)

Cheers
Tim

is it cup & cone or cartridge bearings?

the former use loose ball bearings, you can replace them easily

the latter have to be knocked out and new bearing fitted

in both cases it may simply be a matter of adjustment

for cup & cone see here...

...may look fiddly, but it's quite straight forward

  • I think its a cartridge? basically i can see that circular disc with no visible ball bearings. I tried to put my screwdriver in the hole and pull out but it didnt come out with small force, didnt want to excert a large force incase i damaged it. i assume a bit of wd40 will help it free itself?

cartridge bearings often need to be drifted out, sometimes with a tool, then the new ones have to be pressed in, which may also need a tool

tools can be improvised, but whichever method the forces need to be parallel to the axle, trying to lever out will probably fail

there's a guide with pics here, may not be correct for your wheels!!! but will give an idea

  • thanks for the advice sungod, but do you know if there are generic bearing cartridges? googling my wheelname yields few if any british links to specialised roval pave bearings...

the bearings will be a standard size

if you can't find a reference to the wheels you'll need to measure the old ones
