Hi,

I am trying to convert an old Rockhopper to a single speed. The only wheels i have are from a bike with disk brakes, can I use these wheels?

What are you trying to do?

If you're intending to run rim brakes they need to have a braking surface

some disc wheels are disk only, others have a braking surface on the rim, what rims are they?

Ah, I get it now, it's a real old rockhopper frame with no disc brake bosses, I have one of them. Make sure the rims are designs for rim brakes.

How can I tell if the rims "have a braking surface"?

Look at them - it will be fairly obvious. Or post a pic.
