Hi ive got a mavic aksium rear wheel for my decathlon triban bike. I got the wheel of a friend to replace a badly buckled wheel. Im think i need a new hub for the wheel as its got lateral play, and the hub (where the cassette slides on it) is chewed up.
basically my question is do i need to replace the hub with another mavic hub? or can i use another make? Ive been looking for an online shop which sells mavic aksium rear wheel hubs.

Tim

I think you'll find it has to be an Aksium hub. I think those hubs have more spokes on the drive side.
  • Im at a loss to find online places which would sell one any suggestions?

You can't but a new Mavic Aksium hub and even if you could, rebuilding an Aksium wheel to a decent standard is not simple.
Better luck with new bearings maybe?

You don't prise the bearings out, they are very tight, you need to remove the skewer and free hub, then take a hammer and hit the non drive side axle out, you need to hit a few times and hard, this will then take out the bearing from the drive side, then push the skewer all the way through, then turn it round put back in the wrong way round on the drive side, and hit out the non drive bearing with a hammer.

Read the serial number on the bearings, look up the nearest place that sells bearings (not necessarily a bike shop) purchase the ones you need, then put them back in reversing the process above, making sure they are correctly seated and pushed fully back in place.

second hand hubs come up on eBay cheaply when people write off or wear out the rim.

assuming the freehub is ok and can mount a cassette on it, just looking at new or bearing adjustment as mentioned above
