New rims scored, is this recoverable?
A few weeks ago I purchased some new wheels and also purchased new pads. Whilst cleaning the bike today I noticed one side of the rear rim looks badly scored. On closer inspection it looks like something has got between the pad and the surface (see images below). I've put one of the old pads back for now but my question is do you think the damage is permanent or can it be sorted. With a car the surface of the braking surface usually sorts itself out with new pads.

It's not unusual... rims are sacrificial and occasionally hard material stuck in the pad does that... don't worry, in time you will wear it off... and then wear it outleft the forum March 20230

You could also try some better stopping and less abrasive to the rim pads such as Swissstop Greens (or they just came out with a newer and supposedly better compound which I know nothing about) or Koolstop Salmon pads. Your rims will last much longer.0

I wouldn't worrry about that at all. You could flick all those little bits of crap out of the pads though, that'll slow the wear down.0

+1
Them black cheap and nasty pads are terrible and will knack your rims prematurely. Swisstop of Koolstop are the way forward. So much better braking. Feel much more controlled. especially in the wet.0 -
Thanks for the info and advice. I'll order a couple of sets of the suggested pads.

You don't need new pads... green, yellow, blue, red, or salmon they will all pick up debris from the road and score your rims... what you need is to check yours periodically and clean them as neededleft the forum March 20230 -
I use Koolstop Salmons cause they stop me much better in the wet than the black ones that came with my bike so have stuck with them. Not sure about wear rates with different ones - but - as its not so much the pad itself that wears a rim but the debris that gets stuck in it, softer pads like Koolstop Salmon or Swiss Gree should be worse! Still I'm sticking with mine cause I want to stop when it's wet. Just check em and pick the little metal bits out every now and again.0
