SRAM GXP BB and cranks - spacers??

I've just installed SRAM Rival on my recently purchased Cervelo RS 2008 frame and I need to check on here for some wisdom.
I initially installed the BB with no spacers but couldn't get rid of the play in the cranks without overtightening the bolt on the non drive side crank. The BB came with 2 spacers, so I added one - same result. Then I added the other to the other side and this seemed to do the trick. However to remove the play I need far less than the stated 12-15Nm torque. Also there is now some clicking coming from the BB under load.
I've checked the pedals and BB cups and all seem to be installed and tight. Basically - have I used the right number of spacers?? Or have I done something else wrong??
Thanks in advance ...

the spacers are for BSA bb. You dont need the spacers if you have italian bb.
You should tighten the bb to the required torque. the click noise maybe the case you over tightened the BB previouslyand damaged it.Road - Cannondale CAAD 8 - 7.8kg

So I managed to solve it. It is simply that SRAM cranks require A LOT of torque. The 12-15Nm was not right for the interior nut. It is actually 47-53Nm. I dug out my torque wrench and dialled in 47Nm and even though the handle is 10 inches long only just managed to do it. Now have no spacers and no play. I'll see tomorrow if the clicking has gone.
Felt very odd putting so much torque onto a bike part!!Riding the Etape du Tour for Beating Bowel Cancer - click to donate http://bit.ly/P9eBbM0
