Hi I recently purchased a Ribble Sportive with Tiagra Groupset. Came fully built as I opted for store pick up.

Went out for my first ride today and noticed that the rear derailleur didnt like changing down especially in the higher range 1 - 4. 5 - 10 seem to be fine I also got a lot of skipping on the chain and noise in the middle gears too.

I have tried to adjust the tension in the rear derailleur and now But still struggling in the lower gears and now the middle range will only go into every other gear now.

Do I need to break the bike in a bit more to notice improvement, I just cant seem to get decent gear shifting accross the whole cassette and the chain sound rough??

check the rear wheel is fully seated in the dropouts - stand on the righthand side of the bike, lean across it so that your weight is on the saddle, reach down and release the rear qr, if you feel a clunk it's likely the wheel was not seated, reclamp the qr, now you may be able to adjust successfully

also check that the cable is routed correctly to the clamp bolt

this document shows cable path and adjustment instructions...

if none of these work, it may be that the rear hanger is slightly bent, best to go back to the shop as it's easiest to align with the correct tool

Check that all the cable housing runs are correctly seated. Can sometimes be an issue if it's overlooked by the mechanic (not that I've recently done just this and didn't figure it out for weeks, oh no),

Bikes don't need to be "broken in". You should ask the shop to fix it for you. A brand new bike shouldn't be handed over in this condition.

UPDATE : Ribble have now sorted this form me last week as I waited in store.

    Gear shifting is now fine.

However i hvae now noticed that when in the large ring at the front and from gears 4 and above the chain sounds like it is rubbing but upon inspection the chain isnt anywhere near either side on the front derailleur. What could this be?

sounds like just cross chaining - normally only a issue in gears 1 and or 2 when on front large ring. basically its just the angle the chain is being strectched at, causing it to rub more on the edges of the sprocket. Best to avoid big - big and small - small gear combinations ( to prolong chain and cassette life) you have the equivalent ratio by using the other ring which maintains a straighter chainline.
