Strangely, changing to an SLX rear mech from a Deore and now I have way too much chain slack. I thought they would be compatible. Very confused. Any advice?

Er no.....first is the chain the right size - if it is shortening it is a really bad idea! - secondly have you changed to a shorter mech without enough capacity, thirdly is the spring fubarred?

Looks like the chain was simply too long. Took it off and measured it against the original and hey presto, 6 links too much. All sorted now. Shifts like a dream.

Can't believe the Deore didn't moan about it. Maybe it did and gravity was helping it. The spring was weak and the chain slap was unbearable so gravity might have been on its side.

    Cheers for the tips.

Why not now measure it properly (big/big missing out rear mech and add one pair of links) as it may still be the wrong size.
