I've just bought a set of clipless pedals ( shimano M520's) I have the spring tension set to the lowest setting but the right hand side pedal seems harder to clip in and out of compared to the left hand side, is this normal for clipless pedals?

maybe the cleat angle or pedal tension is a bit different, doesn't matter

as long as you can ride without issues, safely clip in/out and ride without unexpected unclipping, that's all that counts

    Agree with above ^^^^^
And ideally get accustomed to unclipping with the same foot first each time (I always unclip my left foot first, sounds like that would be good for you too?). And the unclipping usually gets a little easier once the cleats and pedals have been used for a while and have some wear.

check the space either side of the cleat is the same in the recessed area of the shoe.

    They will wear in.

...and don't forget, double sided pedals have tension adjustment on both sides!

Mine are Shimano SPD-SLs rather than SPDs but mine are like this as well. The left hand pedal requires more effort to unclip than the right hand one. At first I thought that this was the reason I was struggling to unclip quickly (I generally leave my right foot clipped in) but after a bit of practice, it has become clear that I just needed to get used to it.

Now I don't notice at all. As long as they work, that's all that matters.
