I did 125 miles on Tuesday, with my previous longest ride of 86 miles done last March. I do at least one 65 mile ride a month and the majority of the rest of my riding is a 7 mile commute to work. I knew that the 86 didn't kill me, I know I can plod along at 15/16 mph / heart rate of approx 70-75% max for hours and I also knew that doing 125 would hurt at some point. I mentally split the ride into three parts and stopped for a stretch and a sandwich at each split. It helped that the majority of the ride was on virgin territory so my mind may have been more focussed on looking at the scenery and checking for junctions instead of telling me that my knee / arse / neck was hurting! Fuel little and often - every 40 minutes I got a banana / cereal bar / malt loaf down my neck; as others have correctly pointed out you need to spend some hours in the saddle finding out - possibly the hard way - what works for you food and drink-wise. Get a decent pair of bib-shorts to wear but accept that unless you are very fortunate your butt will ache at some point.

If you can do a 40 mile ride OK now then go and do a 60 - just take a bit of food and an extra bottle of drink and slow down a bit. If that 60 is OK then do more of them, then do a 100.

What sort of route is your ride? A C2C across the Lakes / Dales / North York Moors would be a different beast to Wiggle's Flat out in the Fens for example...

That is a weird ride. Your average speed was 14.9 yet your maximum speed was 16.8?!?!?

I'm beginning to see why your average speeds are 'usually' above 18mph. You need to climb some hills! You have covered 650 miles this year and only climbed 8300 feet!!! Your biggest climb is only 415 feet!

    I did a ride yesterday which was 104 miles and climbed 7500 feet and I averaged 16.5mph - http://app.strava.com/activities/57494878

Well done on the 50 by the way!!
    It's 39.09 miles, in 2 hrs and 4mins, 18.9 average, 2930 calories
Don't believe what endomondo is telling you about the number of calories being used - there is no way you have burned up 2930 calories doing a 40 mile ride. You may have used 1000-1200. It would usually be in the region of 500-600 calories an hour!

  • FD, i wouldnt trust the max speed that shows, I had to put the route in manually today as my phone died yesterday whilst mid ride, I thought it might so I noted the time I left Sale to work out how long it took.

As for hills, I completely agree, I have been meaning to get in the car and drive out to the Peaks but I don't get much time, so I try and find the hills around where I live, not sure there is many interesting ones too close by.

Just noticed the calories are more realistic on Strava, I guess just one of the reasons people are moving from Endo to Strava at a rate of knots!
