HI

Im regularly riding 60miles, however pushing on to 70 and beyond, I seem to be hitting bit of a wall for the last few miles, I don't usually stop on my rides either

What do people normally eat while they are riding to keep them going?

Thanks

I tried digestive biscuits yesterday, but they're a bit dry and get stuck in your throat. Homemade flapjacks are the way forward.

I'll confess to being something of a flapjack fan (in general), though it's fatty. I tend to use fig rolls for cost and convenience at the moment. I'd try bananas, but I imagine I'd find them annoying (like jam sandwiches). I need to try using dates...

Enjoy your ride and have a proper break and enjoy a pizza and and a beer.

That's how our early season club runs to Tessin and Italy usually work!

Soreen, sliced and then squeezed into little cubes.

Can carry half a loaf easily which should do you (does me) for 70.

Sounds to me like your taking to many simple carbs (Mars, glucose and valley bars are packed full of sugar) and so your constantly getting sugar highs then sugar lows....need something less G.I. !

LOL. Picking it out the teeth helps distract from any leg pain!

I tried it for the first time today, not a joyful experience for me I'm afraid, trying to wash it out of my teeth with some hi 5 that i had made a bit too strong was not what i needed 50 mile's into a hard ride.

My ride today was fuelled by Tesco Value flapjack, Soreen and a brief lunch stop for a Steak pie and a Coke - the trick is eating regularly. I was aiming for something to eat every 20km or so (about every 45 minutes) after the first 40km and that seemed pretty much spot on for me. It's all about trying different things and seeing what works for you though.

As turnerjohn says you need to have a mix of fast acting and slow release carbs, for immediate and long term energy, the banana and a flapjack or perhaps a jam sandwich made with wholemeal bread is a good balance.

Try to eat food that is good for you/nutritious rather than glucose tabs and mars bars, these are emergency going into a coma diabetic remedies not food:D

Usually eat flapjack whilst on the bike but tried fig rolls for the first time yesterday. Found them ideal, no mess, easy to digest and did the job. Cheap as well :)

If you're a decent 3rd cat racer or above, and you're riding on a pretty flat circuit, I might believe you, if not, I wouldn't.

For reference, an average speed is calculated using the distance you have travelled and the time you left home and the time you got back again. That's all...

Pre ride banana, jam sandwich and during ride energy gels, jelly babies, Jaffa cakes or fig rolls.

Hahaha people are capable of riding at 18+ mph you know - even on a solo ride (and without being 3rd cat racers).:lol:

I remember trying dates and fig rolls, found them bleedin orrible to be honest. I have a big pre-ride bowl of porridge with honey in it and during the ride I snack on Tesco own fun size mars bars, usually about 2 of them

I think high 5 drinks are a bit of a rip off and £25 a tub !!...............you have to be kidding me, 4x500ml bottles of Tesco sport drink that cost £1.75 does me just nicely

I take home made flapjack and some go ahead for bars, as they are pretty high in cards, and lowish on sugar/fat, and sometimes dried fruit such as Raisens, seems to be doing me ok

Just to clarify, food that contains...

    white flour
    honey
    milk
    yoghurt
    chocolate
    fruit
    fruit juice
    cake
    jam
    biscuits
    packaged cereals

Are all foods that contain simple carbohydrates and are therefore the same as that other well known carb that most people try to avoid ie sugar

    So a 2.2kg tub of cost £23.39 from wiggle and makes 44 x 500ml which = 53p per 500ml

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/high5-energy-source-22kg-tub/

    Your Tesco 'sport drink' cost £1.75 for 4 x 500ml = 43p per litre

I'd say the extra 20p per litre for the High Five is more than worth it.

Tesco drink has 29g carbs per 500ml High Five has 45g carbs per 500ml ( I realise there's alot more to it than just carbs but I know what I'd rather be using)

I take 1 x 750ml of drink powder and one x 750ml plain water which works out at about 80p for the powdered bottle
