Hi,

I have a Bianchi (around 1992) with a Campagnolo 6 Speed with the shifter on the Downtube.
I have 2 questions :

1 - Does anyone known which model my derailleur is ?? (I removed the pulleys to clean them)

2 - I have some shifting problem, the top 2 speed are hard to get into and the top speed downshift to the second as soons as I climb a slope.

Is it besauce the derailleur is old and had some problem to stay at my top gear ?

Thanks for your help

You are running friction shifters so any 6/7/8 speed rear mech will work. An old 105 mech would do the trick very well they are brilliant so would a shimano 600 rear mech. 8 speed Shimano kit rocks.

It is a Victory... if your shifting is not good is not because of the derailleur, unless that is broken or has severe play.

    Typically the causes are

    1) You have never used friction shifting and need to learn how to shift
    2) The cable has not enough tension or is not routed correctly
    3) The mech hanger is bent, check the cage is almost vertical
    4) Your chain is too narrow and not suitable for a 6 speed freewheel
5)Your jockey wheels are worn to the point they are no longer effective.
    6) Your limit screws need to be adjusted

Victory was not Super Record, but it was better than most junk on sale these days

Ugo has a point with his list. It would be worth going through it before buying a new mech. I have a triomphe mech shifting 6 speed and it O.K, I think my hanger is slightly out of alibgment but given it is an old Alu frame with an intergrated hanger I am relucant to straighten it. Yo will have no such problems on a steel frame. However your frame may lack the b tension screw tab which would make using a 105 mech or similar pointless. It would be worth checking that too.

You need to be a bit more precise as it isn't that clear how things aren't happening but the downshifting when you climb sounds more like a problem with the shifters rather than the derailleur - ie there is not enough friction in the shifters to stop the rear mech spring from pulling the shifter cable. This at least suggests your rear mech has a nicely strong spring!

Given the state of the shifter cable, I would completely strip the bike, thoroughly clean the components and reassemble from scratch with fresh grease etc. Only then is it reasonable to start questioning the components rather than the mechanical condition of the bike.
