Anyone using one of these and got any comments about them.

Also, are there decent riding GPS apps?

I bought one and it works just fine. Only thing is I bought the thing on impulse without considering whether I actually wanted my iPhone mounted on the handlebars, which it turns out I don’t. I’m going to keep it though, it might be useful for the Marmotte when my jersey pockets will be full of food. Strava and Endomondo are both good GPS apps.

I got one of these for £3.99 in March. Used it ever since, for over 650 miles in total and it's still going strong. Does the job. :D

My favourite app is Cyclemeter. The only downside of it compared to Strava and MapMyRide is that it doesn't automatically sync with a website. Upside is that you can use it in conjunction with the website ridewithgps.com which is free.

I plan out routes on ridewithgps.com and export them to Cyclemeter. Then after a ride I export the ride data from Cyclemeter to ridewithgps.com.

So, I have a map on my handlebars for navigation on routes, as well as various stats, for under a tenner. :D

Cyclemeter have a comparison list of their features vs competitors:

If you do the same route regularly, the ghost riders on Cyclemeter are so cool. On the map screen you'll have the marker for where you are, and then three others moving along - green for your best ever time on it, red for your worst and yellow for the median. You can race your best time marker. :D

Turn off wifi and bluetooth on your phone to extend the battery life as far as possible. I've found that about 50 miles or a bit under 4 hours is the limit from a full charge with the app running. I carry a portable charger on longer rides - where I'm on a section where I know the route, my iPhone goes in my bag to charge for half an hour:

I don't think I'd trust that this hold anything for very long! Unless your roads are a lot better than the ones near me!

The first time I used it was convinced my iPhone was going to go flying out and down the road! It's sturdier than it looks though. And no, the roads are godawful around here. Do you remember that Top Gear where Jeremy Clarkson is on a really rough road (Africa?), vibrating horribly, and goes "MAKE IT STOOOPPPPPP!!!" That's what some of my rides have been like.

Actually that's a point OP - I did read that handlebar mounting is actually bad for the iPhone as over time the vibration can shake connections inside the phone loose, notably the one to the camera.
  • I got one of these for my 5 from here:

All I can say is that it's an awesome piece of kit, best thing is the quick release and how it 'lock's the phone in place.
No chance of it flying off. Got it on my Brev M :D
Thinking about getting the Universal kit for my GS3 for the umm 'Summer?
  • Firstly this mount is by far the most superior bike mount I have ever used. There is no way on gods earth the phone is coming out of the special locking system it clips into on the bike. I can lift my whole bike up by the phone when its clipped in. I have had a cycle accident with the bike up in the air and the phone has remained secure and in tact! I use it with Strava mainly but also 'Maps' if I'm not too sure where I'm going. The GPS turns the map with the handle bars - its a seriously neat piece of kit!

I would only recommend buying one from the UK specialist company http://www.cycsmart.co.uk They even offer a no quibble money back if you don't like it and free delivery so it's worth a punt!

p.s. they also well these wall mount things that allows you to put your phone (or ipad) anywhere else where you have the mounts. I have one in my office and in my kitchen - it's ace!
