unless you have any issues with drop handle bars (Back / neck trouble) i would echo the previous advice and consider a cx bike.
I have the Giant Roam 4 , and converted to a Giant TCX 2 the differnce in ride is like night and day .
My commute is around 25 mile round trip over road, paths, farm tracks etc and the TCX copes with all of this with no problems ,it is fast and agile on and off the road.
The Giant TCX 3 (around £699 Ithink) took top honours in a firness mag review a little while ago, I would have a look at this bike.
    regards

Entry level CX around £ 600 - £ 750 unless you have a good reason for not wanting drops.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Listen to the people. I purchased the crosstail sports disk less than 2 months ago and I am now looking for a cx bike.

this might not be much use as I only ride road bikes but i have a specialized and a cube and i'd say that the cube is probably somewhere between 4357934597 and 876098790678% better in every respect!
