Stuck crank dust caps

So the BB/cranks on my old Viking have been making some funny sounds this week. So I've been trying to remove the cranks and have a look at the BB.

The non drive side steel dust cap came off fine. But when I tried to remove the drive side one the hex wrench just turned inside the hole. I presume the previous owner has stripped it.

As you'll see from the photo brute force and ignorance has made things somewhat worse.

Any ideas how I get this off?

A pin wrench is what you need --youll need to drill accuratelly two holes, opposite to each other obviously, in the cap,the same distance apart as the pins on your wrench
  • Great, I'll give that a go. Can't seem to find one locally. Might drill the holes and then see if I can use something else in place of a pin wrench. Thanks for the suggestion.

Can you dremel the hole into a slot and undo it with a big screwdriver or a chisel?
  • I've no dremel but that might be easier yes. Also gives me an excuse to have a wander round B&Q. :-)

i would try penetrating oil before anything fancy. spray, leave sit, repeat a fe times, then try hack it. works much better than wd40

If you have some torx bits lying around try using one of the appropriate size. Try and use a size that needs a little bit of coaxing (i.e. hammering) into the hole. These grip really well in stripped out hex holes.
