SPD/Cleats/Shoes

Ok so my new bike has come with SPD pedals on as standard and as I was planning to go down this route anyway I think I will order myself some shoes so I can use them.
My question is a simple one really, but do any cleats fit any spd pedals and do any of the shimano shoes take any of the shimano cleats?
