tyres for short commute and tame offroad

I want to commute a few times a week (15 mile roundtrip on city streets) and also ride tame offroad stuff (Cathkin Braes, Glentress etc, hardpack, limited roots, rocks, little mud) on one set of tyres. I was thinking 2.1 Small Block 8s. Is there something that would clearly be better?

work well on tarmac and the roots in magic mushroom are the only thing to be wary of in the wet
just no mud plugging... they wallow big style
