My Inbred is a bag of spanners - should I go Singlespeed?

edited May 2013 in MTB general
I ride my road bike mostly, but decided to push the MTB (an on-one inbred) out of the shed and ride it up the woods. I had a whale of a time, but:

1) The rear derailleur clatters around like nobodies business
2) The shocks (Tora 318) need a service

So, my thoughts are, given that all the kit on it is about 7 years old now:

1) Put a carbon fork on
2) Convert to singlespeed.

Sound like a plan? Any ideas how to go about it?

    Fit a chainstay protector.

Service forks (1 hour at most and cost you about £10)

    Simples innit!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

Already have a chainstay protecter, its literally the mech that clatters around. Amazingly, it is still perfectly indexed (testimony to my mechanical skills no doubt).

I always thought fork servicing was an expensive business?

Nope, read manual, get right fork oil to refresh, basic tools, all that is needed for a service, a tune is different.

I even cheated once and serviced mine without taking the forks off the bike first, just removed wheel and brake caliper, but to be honest not sure I saved much time given the hassle it was then to empty oil out the uppers while attached to the remaining 7.5Kg of bike!

When you say mech clatters around, not sure what you mean, sounds like chain slap?

Either the rear mech is fubarr'd then, which would also manifest itself in other ways as well, or it's chain slap.

That and get your forks serviced!

I ran a 1x9 Inbred for years with a freebie MBUK chainstay protector and the very old (circa 01) XT rear mech never caused me any issues at all.

I'm running the same mech and chainstay protector on the Inbred 29 now and STILL no problems.

yes, its only £20 or so to make the bike considerably simpler and cleaner (not to mention the weight loss)

Single speed is silly so no,

service your shocks and get a clutch rear mech solved.

10sp clutch rear mech on a 7 year old bike? Really?

my local bike specialist shop will service front suspension forks for £12 + vat

and the entire bike for £30+vat

minus the cost of parts if you bike parts need changing

not sure if this is a good deal or not either way

    still cheaper then new forks

I might ride it till the bits fall off and take it from there.

It's an Xt rear mech - don;t remember fitting it!

So if they fit parts worth more than £30 they pay you? Excellent deal.

+1 - singlespeed is a great way of ensuring you never have the right gear for the given circumstances you find yourself in.
