thinking of doing my first 75mls charity ride in 5 weeks, but have ever done 30 miles at the most, training about 3 times a week getting in about 40 miles / week over 3 days. People re telling me I need much more preparation before I go and try 75 miler.

Big question is whether your seat fits well enough and is comfortable for the 75 miles - probably at least 5 or 6 hours of riding.
If you keep your speed slow enough so that you are not 'pushing hard', but 'riding easy', and you eat and drink plenty then you will have the strength to do 75 at a leisurely pace.
Another concern is whether there are hills, and of course the weather (hot, cold, wet, etc.).
