So as I leant my bike up against a tree today the wind blew it over and as the bike fell it landed on the rear mech hanger and is now very very bent and wont change gear properly and is just being a bit of a dog! - Is it an easy job to replace it myself (minimal mechanic experience with the bike) or is it a LBS job?

Ta lads

It's easy. The most difficult thing is usually finding the right replacement hanger.
    More problems but still living....

Dead easy as the hanger just has one bolt connecting it to the frame and one to the deraileur - check carefully how its connected now (take a photo) - order/buy the replacement hanger and fit - job done! If you know the bike and frame you can find replacement hangers on-line or your lbs may stock. Shouldn't even have to disconnect cables etc.

You recommend a site mate? - It's for a Pinarello and i'm not getting as many results on google as i'd thought.. and all of em seem to be american or european sites... Do places like wiggle or chain reaction not stock 'em?

Sorry don't know a specific site for Pinarello - AFAIK some on-line lbs's do them - maybe post your specific bike in a new thread with the question and someone on here may know which you need and/or where to get it? Or surely any Pinarello dealer (probably not Halfords though !) will know or most likley have one in stock.

get the bike down to the LBS they should be able to get it close enough for you to ride.

Can you bend 'em back? - They strong enough for that?

    it all depends.

either it will or it will not. if it does you are riding at the weekend. if it does not you are in the same situation as you are now.

    what you got to loose?

PS order two hangers so you have a spare. Or if it straightens keep that as a spare when the new one comes.

and leaning bikes against anything is a bad idea unless it is the ground.

Just did a Google for 'Pinarello mech hanger' and it came up with Sigma Sport and SJS Cycles. Not sure if they're the right ones?

You can also buy 'emergency' mech hangers which fir most frames and would do as a temporary fix.

You'll struggle to bend it back for it to work perfectly, bending it back is something that works out on a ride to get you back home but if you have a decent vice you might be able to get it good enough to use for a while longer.

Ring around a few LBSs and ask if they have any. Be prepared to take the old one down to double check it's the right one (the mech just unbolts from it). Failing that, order one online tomorrow and there's a chance it will get here for the weekend, actually order two for when it happens again.

Thanks for all the advice lads.. pretty new to this cycling lark and loving it and was just a bit pissed off to be frank when it happened as i was looking forward to my ride out on saturday morning (lets hope for nice weather) - I've given bending it back ago, and touch wood it lookes ok and on the work stand it seems to be changing gear ok etc.. So looks like i'll be riding this weekend :)

But I will give a few of my LBS a call tomorrow lunch time to see if they can get hold of mech hangers for my bike.. Lets hope they aren't too much money :S Seen they are around £30 mark each onlin, which is more than i though they would be ...

Goldtec do hangers. I got one for my Pinarello from them.

Wouldn't risk it, I bent mine back, 15 miles into next ride it rode out of place and sheared off into my wheel - became expensive having to replace the hanger & rear mech in the end.

Yeah I really wouldn't bend back a aluminium hanger, it's not just a case of it it bends back without snapping (they're purposely quite brittle) you'll be fine - it will likely be significantly weakened and could then shear mid-ride (dodgy gear shift etc.)
