Same height and inside leg.... I have a Whyte and am a M but in Specialised I was an L.

    I can't imagine she'd be a S - she's taller than the average woman....

    p.s. that's assuming it's a women's bike you're looking at. Generally speaking down a size if she's riding a gents.

Can't beat trying a bike out though - no other brands available locally to test ride?

Definitely M or Large (small will probably not be big enough).
The best thing to do is try one.

S,M,L sizing is more likely based on average bloke size than average woman size.
I'm 5'6" and ride small frames.
If you can't get a Defy to try I'd suggest trying out whatever she can and taking note of the geometry of what feels comfortable then comparing it with the Defy's geometry - the effective top tube length is the main thing to take notice of.

Thanks for replies. I have a m/l defy(53)cm and this is way too big for her. Just not sure if a a medium will still be too long for her reach..
