ye they are 700cc rims just a bit wider so 38 or 42 mm tyres will be fine.

I'm running 1.25" (32mm) road tyres on my Cube 29er - so you can go narrower than 38mm if you want to - I was told anything wider than my rim would be fine and no issues thus far.

As Ste says, rule of tumb is tyres wider than rims, my Nephew is running 32's on a 29er with 19mm rims just fine.

A 29er rim is a 700c rim for an MTB is all!
