Cycling with Arthritis?

I have been diagnosed with arthritis mainly in the big toe area of each foot and it can get very painfull when pedalling.
Unfortunately it is right above the cleats (metatarsal) - I use Speedplay pedals and have ordered a base extender that allows me to move the cleats 1.4cm backwards. If this does not work I may have to drill some MTB/SPD shoes and look at going to a mid-foot cleat position.
Does anyone else suffer from this problem and if so what have they done to remedy it ?
Anybody else using a mid-foot cleat position ?
Thanks - Michael.

  • I would guess that the shoes you wear will be more important than the cleat position. I would suggest shoes with a stiff sole but with a padded insole, and obviously a good fit so that they are neither too tight or too loose.
