Hi Guys i happened to stumble across this bike on a well known auction site and it had been badly titled so it did not get anywhere near the attention it should have done or anywhere near the price it should have done in my opinion anyway i risked the wrath of my wife by bidding the minimum opening bid and because of the way it was titled still to my shock and surprise i won Before anyone asks why i did not let the seller know the error of his ways and feel sorry for him as he was a absolute cock with too much money a Bentley and a R8 on his drive he bought this bike to do a 50 mile bike ride with his mates never made the end and the bike has not been used since he says less than 100 miles at most when he took the money of me he just threw it on a table and never even counted it

I am wanting to know if you guys think i got as much of a bargain as i think i did

Its worth £1200, not a penny more as anything is worth what someone is willing to pay.
Its not very nice to try and disgrace the seller in the way that you did, if the item sold for far less than what people would feel is the market value and he still sold it at that price he may well be a great guy as many people won't/dont do that.

I hope you enjoy the bike though, it looks lovely.

    Price /= value.

Anyway, the groupset is four or more years old, and I suppose that would imply the bike as well. The frame alone went for £1500 back in the day, 4ZA are Ridley's own brand finishing kit, and I suppose the wheels would have been about £300.

It would have been the guts of two and a half grand new. If it's as unused as you say, you're coming away pretty well. I'd say it could have gone for £15-1800 easily as a whole bike, nearer 2 grand parted out.

Definitely not me im afraid, I wouldn't buy an R8, it would be like buying a Porsche Boxter.

Was he rude to you on purchase then ?

    PaulHass,

The Campagnolo 10 speed Record Groupset of your bike is pre-Ultra Torque/skeleton brakes era, hence will be before 2006/2007. The Chainset BB should still be the square taper type. However, some believe this was the best Record groupset Campagnolo made!

I think the price you paid is fair both for you & the seller.

Hope that helps. Enjoy the bike!

    Cheers

1200 quid is probably a pretty fair price, I don't think it's worth a whole lot more, cheap wheels, out of date groupset (most campag riders will have 11 speed so commonality doesn't match) everything's nice enough and it's not worthless, but equally it's not super sort after I'd say.

Be happy, but you paid a fair price but if you really want to prove to your wife that's worth more than you paid, you're going to have to sell it.

If it's the one that went for £1300 i would say about right - a decent buy if really as new but not spectacular.

Edit - missed the 1200 bit above

No, not really - most Campag riders will have 10 speed. Only relatively recent Athena and above is 11 speed - you can be sure Campagnolo sell more Veloce and Centaur than above. And, of course, Record 10 speed is reckoned by many to be superior to the 11 speed (better quality and all that). Quite honestly, the only out of date bit of the groupset is the cranks and BB and I can't see many noticing that on the bike. Rear Mech alone is worth well over £100 - probably more like £150 given that it is barely used.

And, of course, if you think wheels that in their current version retail at £450 are cheap wheels, then you are better off than I am.........

These types of threads always amaze me - does it really matter if anyone else thinks you got a bargain? I can see some value in seeking opinions if you are a beginner and you are unsure if a bike is a good price and will suit your purposes but once you have bought it then it's all a bit academic really, isn't it? Be happy with the bike and the price you paid and don't go looking for someone to reinforce what you bargain you got because there will always be someone who thinks otherwise...

You have paid more than enough for that bike @1200 so no need to sound smug about your purchase - given your title I thought it cost you £250. As for the chap who said it was worth 17-1800 - that's bullshite.

Fine bike though the Damocles - I sold one for £875 (though with 105 rather than Record)

It's a nice bike and.in good condition, but realistically I don't think the seller got a bad deal - its old, and on that basis has limited resale value. If you'll use it and think you got a bargain then fine, but I don't think its market value is much higher than 1k

Groupset is more than 8 years old, so hardly a bargain for a third-hand bike.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

For perspective, you could probably get £150 today for the rear derailleur alone.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

I think you got a good buy with this. The groupset may be older, but it’s definitely a post 2009 Damocles frameset.

Value aside, how does it ride?
