According to a report in Belgian newspaper De Tijd, Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma-QuickStep) is currently being investigated for tax evasion.

The case is apparently being handled by special tax investigators who are looking at whether Boonen didn’t declare enough of his income to Belgian authorities while living in the tax haven of Monaco. Boonen lived in Monaco from 2005 until 2012 and has since returned to Belgium.

Apparently Boonen’s manager hasn’t responded to the newspaper’s requests for confirmation, and neither has the champion cyclist.

That's completely random - why should he have to declare anything to Belgium if he's resident in another country? F*cking Nazi tax laws :(

    Ignorance is no defence.

That's got to sting a bit.

Depends where he earned the money and how many days he spent in Belge whilst claiming residence elsewhere. Also depends if he really was resident in Monaco or simply bought a 1 bedder and delcared it as his home.

^this. God knows how much he's paying his accountant but I hope he's booted them halfway to Greenland by now

Exactly. Anybody earning the kind of money he's on and earning money in various countries needs a very switched on accountant.

Either he was poorly advised, or he was deliberately trying to evade tax and has been caught.
