To my delight our company are sponsoring a team to take part in the ride for the roses event which takes place near me on the 8th June. We had a great response from the employees and we have 33 people taking part. We have 11 people doing the 80Km event and 22 people doing the 120Km event including myself.
Of course the company are also giving all paricipants a free shirt and bib shorts to take part in complete with company logo to give us maximum exposure during the event. This is where the problem starts. Today i recieved my shirt and shorts as we had a photo shoot. In a nutshell the shorts are pis@ poor . The pad is a couple of Millimetres thich and no more. I have to ride 25Kms each way to and from the event so will be riding 170Kms on the day. I know already that my arse is going to be killing me with these shorts but i must wear them. Can anybody recommend anything that i could wear underneath to lessen the pain I,ve thought about another pair of shorts underneath but don,t really fancy doing that. Does anybody have any suggestions.

aside from destroying a decent pair to cut the pad out and attach it to the crap ones there's not a lot of scope, two pairs on a hot day woudn't be fun

can you cut the logo out and tack it to another pair of shorts?

as a last resort, there's always the "oops, i snagged them on a nail" excuse, as long as you can find a nail to do it on you'll even be telling the truth

    Padded undershorts.

Essentially a pair of lycra boxers with a pad in.
I got a pair when i first started cycling so I could use my rowing kit on the bike without any discomfort. dhb pair is under 20 quid i think.

Can you not get in touch with some senior manager of some sort (the folk that would take umbrage to you not wearing them) at said company to explain that the shorts are not fit for purpose? Surely the jersey product placement would be more important to them? See what the other 32 participants views are; if there are enough complaints then I'm sure they would relent?

    +1

Endura do a quality pair. Do not underestimate the power of double padding

It was a senior manager that was responsible for the purchasing and the budget of the team kit. However, he is not a cyclist and would not know one pair of shorts from another. We all mentioned the shorts today but as far as he was concerned the shorts and shirt are to be worn only once in an event and thats it. After that we can keep them. It,s too late and theres no money anyway to order new team kit but i have offered to help in the search for new team kit if we take part in the event again next year. We cannot wear this years kit next year as one of the sponsors whose name appears in large letters will definitely not be with us next year.I can see me walking fukin bow legged on saturday the 8th June with these shorts they really are crap. I also mentioned today that i,d like to do a trial run with the shorts and wear another pair underneath but i,ve been told that i am only allowed to wear them on the day of the event and they want us all to turn up on the day with new kit.

cut the chamois out of the company pair and wear your standard bibshorts then put the company ones over the top

I have done this a few times when i raced for a team with crappy shorts

I would wear my own shorts - simple as that. There is no way i would trash my undercarriage because i had been asked/told to wear a rubbish pair of shorts.

M'eh! Just stick some black tape over the logos and try them out. Otherwise I'd call their bluff and say I'll do it on my own without the kit or with them with my own shorts. Maybe you could point your manager to a BDSM forum if he is into that sort of thing!

The manager is also doing the ride so quite frankly i hope he can hardly walk at the end of it. At least he will have learnt his lesson and hopefully accept my offer of helping to find suitable kit for next year if we take part. Thats a good idea about the tape only problem is its raining so much of late dont think the tape will stay on for 150+Kms but hope to give it a try.

Why not cut the company bibs into "shorts"? Then run them over the top of a decent set on bibs, remove the pad also. Wearing double Lycra on your legs will be fine for sure

    Dare I say MTFU?

Thats not a massively long ride and if you are a regular cyclist surely your butt has to be pretty used to the rigours of a day in the saddle?

I am a regular cyclist for about 35 years now and yes i,m used to a day in the saddle but then i wear my Assos and have no problem. The Assos are the rolls royce and these company shorts the clapped out mini. Anyway i,m covering the logos with tape and doing a ride on Saturday. I,m hoping to do 150Kms but if my rear starts getting sore then it will be an early shower for me and i,ll try one of the other suggestions.
