Do you actually need maps for Dubai - isn't it a case of 'this dusty sandy windblown road into the desert or that one'?!!

You can get the OSM data for GCC states here:
    http://download.geofabrik.de/asia/gcc-states.html

But you'll need to do a bit of geekery to get it on the garmin 800.
I see from your profile that you're a programmer, so you'll be fine....!
Just follow the guide here http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mkgm ... eate_a_map

Use mobile atlas creator to get a kmz file from google maps, place this in the custom maps folder on your garmin

I've tried that method before and it seemed to produce files which the garmin struggled to process. It became a bit laggy. Perhaps I was doing it wrong.

I know it's not ideal but my work is 12noon through 7pm so I've lots of spare time doing nothing so would like to have a go. I've just been googling and there are some clubs that cycle in 150+ numbers so I'd like to tag along for a few km if possible. I'm hoping I can shift a couple of lb whilst in out there :)

Ok i was bored and felt like experimenting so I made one for you.
I can't guarantee the routing will work but it should display all the info you need.
Here's a screenshot - this is the gmapsupp.img being displayed in basecamp.
    dubai.jpg

    Download the gmapsupp.img file here - http://www.scarletfire.co.uk/files/gmapsupp.zip (it's 32Mb zipped)
You'll need to extract the file from the zip archive (about 41Mb) then copy this into the Garmin folder of your micro SD card, then enable it on your garmin. I just tried it and it looks good!

Let me know when you've grabbed the file so I can take it down again.

The link posted earlier in the thread does it all for you: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl .

Select a region, press go, wait a few minutes, download the gmapsupp.img file and bung it on your Garmin.

true, but i wanted to dabble with the various options available when you compile your own maps using the mkgmap tool. Additionally, you can get into customising your own style files which affects how each element is displayed, and at what zoom level things appear - stuff like that.
There is a lot to learn though, so thank goodness for sites like the one you mentioned, for making it so quick and easy.

Next time you are over let me know, there is now a purpose built cycle track that is 85K long, about 300 riders are split into groups each Friday morning dependent on speed and distance. The Dubai Autodrome is also available to use each Wednesday evening for cyclists as is the Yas motor circuit on a Tuesday evening. Then there is the old camel track that has been converted into a cycle park with 4k, 6k and 8k laps. Good surface and shower facilities etc. Don't ride on the roads here on your own, the drivers are a nightmare in general.

@lone wheeler, im back in 6 weeks so would love to do that, I flew out thursday evening and arrived friday at 12.50am so was unable to get to the cycle event which is something I really wanted to do. I will definitely let you know beforehand and make sure I fly out on a wednesday so I can be ready for the Fridays road ride.

@deadhead1971, cant thank you enough, the maps worked a treat, I used it to navigate from my hotel to the Jumeira Palm and back again, it never missed a beat so thanks a lot for that.

No worries, if i'm around then we can sort something out. The cycling scene is getting better all of the time here, the ruler spent AED19million last year completing the cycle track. There is a bike shop, toilets, showers and mini market just short of half way round.

Dont mention that on this forum, I tried telling people here that he has done wonderful things for the economy and local people and all I got for that was abuse :)
I love whats being done in Dubai and the Emirates, I was actually working in Sharjah and the growth looks great. I was shocked at the whole place really as my first visit 4-5 years ago was weird in that I didnt realise just how many unfinished buildings there would be, of course this was right after the financial crisis so the same was seen all over the world.

Im a fan, quite looking forward to returning soon. Hopefully we can meet up at one of the cycle events although I am still getting fit and far from fast.

He has done a lot and he even uses the cycle track himself occasionally. Lots of projects have now started up again and new ones are being released on a regular basis. Off to Saudi again on business next week, now that is a strange place!

Worlds apart. When i go i try and stay as much as possible in the hotel rather than venturing out and have clients visit me instead!
