My beloved and much upgraded Orange P7 (mid 90s vintage) was stolen a while back. I replaced it with a road bike, but I'm now missing the go-anywhere nature of an MTB so am looking to buy a new one.

Budget is around £700.
I'm 5' 10" and about 11st 7lbs
Bike will be used for cross country along bridle paths etc around Exmoor, and also for family duties riding along Tarka Trail and at Centre Parcs with the kids (actually, this is the main reason for getting it, I can't ride my road bike slow enough to stay with the kids easily)

I've seen the Cube Ltd 2012 on offer, which I like the look of (also the Cube Ltd Pro for £755, worth the extra?)
And the Boardmans seem to get good reviews.

These are aluminium frame, whereas the P7 was steel. Are there any Steel-framed alternatives worth looking at?

Any others I should look for? Or avoid like the plague?
