Ok so I have had my new bike a whole 4-5 weeks and I took it for a service today only to make me want a drop bar bike even more.
Now the man at the bike shop showed me a few different ones including this.

http://www.bikescene.co.uk/Orange-CarbO-5443-0-0.html

Now its cheap for what it is I think but I'm a big lad and I don't fancy breaking the frame as I am pretty rough.

Also it is £400 over budget.

So back with my sensible head on I looked at this

Right on Budget.
Cheap because its an old model so resale could be low once I get bored again.

Lastly I looked at this

I have also looked online to see the boardman bikes at this price point are pretty good vfm the only thing stopping me buying a boardman is I should wait till there on offer again.
Now I can wait as I have a bike to get to work back so that's no big deal.
Now I am torn and I am also open to any other input on what to buy for a max of £1000 (I believe that's the most I can get on c2w)

Thanks

  • Out of the two Specialized bikes the Tricross is the better commuter as it takes full mudguards and a pannier rack.

I think the Secteur only takes a full mudguard on the rear. But it is slightly lighter and quicker if you're wanting to do long rides/sportives etc. You could put clip on guards like Crud Roadracers or SKS Raceblades on it though.

I love my Secteur Disc, the parts are lower spec than you'd often get at that price point but that just means upgrading as they wear out. TBH I was between a CF Carrera and the SSD is but I couldn't justify spending that much on a Halford bike. The frame feels great and doesn't mind being jumped, flicked about on mild off road and the stability at speed is great when descending at 40mph+ and the brakes give you plenty of scope to adjust you line as you corner as there's no brake judder allowing for more aggressive and later braking through the corners rather than before the corner. My only niggle is that the brakes can whine when climbing out of the saddle due to flex in the carbon fork. But you'll be upgrading those to hydraulics when the manufacturers and UCI pull their finger out.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Yeah I do want disc breaks but I'm aware there is no hydraulics yet for this type of bike yet and my current bike has them so I will be upgrading once available.

The secteur is also my favourite of the 2 and I will b going for a ride on one in the next week I just need to wait and see if I can have the cycle to work or not from my boss as I just bought a bike 4-5 weeks ago but I now have the bug and I am wanting to go for a drop bar bike already.
I don't mind not having mudguards on yet ( I may well change my mind come winter though) so the option is nice but like said I can always use a clip on one on the front.

Is there any other bikes people would recommend for £1000?

Do they put them on serious offer? If you're looking at Boardmans then at your exact price point they have the Road Team Limited Edition 2013 for £999 in some (I guess larger) stores: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165710

    It won't take mudguards.
    Shut up, knees!

Various Boardmans, a Focus, a Cannondale and an ancient Trek.

Save 10% on some offers then a further 10% for British cycling members makes it a lot cheaper
