Is it motivation or a club I need?

Everytime I go for a ride, I don't do as much as I want to do. Today was pretty dreadful, however haven't been exercising much for the past 10 days due to a running injury, so this could explain it to an extent.
I live in a busy town, so getting to the countryside means I have to do some main roads, which tires me out before I even get to where I'd like the ride to properly start! It seems that with cars behind me, I treat the ride like a race. It's rubbish. I ride alone but am wondering whether a club will help keep the pace?
I am a novice. I enjoy the sport and for the past 2 years have been cycling to work in rain/ hail/ snow. But now have a car so my motivation to do that isn't there anymore. I can also run for much longer than I can cycle. I find cycling more challenging.
I'm unclear as to what I'm really asking for too. Just some advice? Motivational speech? Haha.
Cheers
Luke.

MTFU!
(Think you need a club mate, it's done wonders for me).0 -
Yeah strava I do use. Was great for a while but just got annoying trying to beat times eh!
Haha MTFU. Good idea.0 -
Why are you riding?
Do you really want to ride?
If you've got a car and want to ride nice country lanes but live in a town then put the bike in the car and drive to somewhere nice to ride ...0 -
If I have to ride alone I find I am bored after about 40km, but when out with a group or even riding with someone else I find it much more fun so push myself harder for longer.
I wish I had people to ride with here in my village, as I've seen a few people around but never manage to catch them to exchange details.0 -
Not a bad idea putting the bike in the boot.
I'm like that too mountainmonster. I enjoy riding with people I think a lot more.0 -
Maybe sign up for a challenging event? That keeps me pretty motivated. Once your running injury has past you'll probably feel better as well. I'm currently not able to do any form of exercise, due to a running injury from a marathon, and my mental state has been crap! One good thing, for me anyway, is that the sun has decided to feck off again. So hopefully by the time it gets back I'll be fit and raring to go!
Anyway, I hope you get find a way of getting the motivation back.0 -
Thanks jcondylis thats great advice. I think I'm going to check out the local scene and see what's on offer in that case. My injury sounds pathetic compared to your marathon haha. I was only on my normal training run. Good luck to you also mate.
Cheers guys for the comments and advice...as said, I'll check out the local scene/ clubs etc and see what I fancy.

Pick a place and ride there. I do much of my riding solo. I don't have any motivation issues as long as I don't ride around aimlessly. Riding in a group can't certainly help and I'd suggest joining a club as it's great fun.English Cycles V3 | Cervelo P5 | Cervelo T4 | Trek Domane Koppenberg0

No worries, and thanks. Its kind of depressing not being able to do anything. But once I'm fully fit again I'll be training for the Wiggle Long One (125mile sportive in the South Down area), the thought of making it up the top of the South Downs on a clear sunny day is motivation enough!
Btw, where are you based?0 -
Try a club, just go on a few Sunday runs to see if it is for you. Worst case you'll discover some new routes and maybe better ways to the countryside.0

Grill- that's another thing actually. I like following gps so I know exactly where I am. I dislike not knowing my route so I may invest soon.
Jcondylis- I know that feeling. Proper sucks not beong able to do anything. Wow that sportive looks great. May keep that in mind for the future And I'm based in Maidstone, Kent, so have loads around going on to be fair.
iPete- totally agree. I'll give it a go I reckon. My girlfriends dad has recommended a club he rides with occasionally and they sound exactly what I need.

Try www.cyclingbuddy.com I found some great people to cycle with on there.0

I'm in Cambridge too. It's not miles into the country really?! Cambridge CC do social rides on Sunday's leaving at 9am from Adenbrookes Hospital. St Ives CC does similar. Google them, the details are on their sites.
There is a ride on Tuesday and Thursday evenings leaving at 6.30 pm from Chris's bikes, Girton.
If you are stuck for someone to go out with shoot me a PM and I'll see if I am able to get out with you.
Edit: Realised I have not replied to the OP (similar screen names to blame) who is probably not in Cambridge! The offer to MountainMonster still stands though.0 -
