I'm starting to look for a bike for my wife - thinking of spending c£300-£400.

Initially it will be mainly used for simple family cycling rides - canals etc, but I'm hoping as the kids get older the trips could get a bit more adventurous, local bridleways maybe the blue run etc.

She is about 5ft 5, but with shortish legs (therefore I assume reasonable reach for her height), so not sure if womens specific models would be best or not?

I've been considering 2012 Giant Revel 0 W £360 (Pauls is cheaper but not in her size)

Rockrider 5.3 - £330

possibly Carrera Vengence - £300

or Vulcan - £360

I think the Voodoos are probably a bit too blokey, and maybe 120mm travel too much for her needs.

Any other suggestions or thoughts?

I'm not against looking second hand, but not seem much come up of her size (prob small / 16") and reasonable distance (midlands) lately.

I wouldn't worry about women specific, they tend to cost more and you'd be better placed getting a good bike and then changing whatver needs changing (realistically saddle and maybe grips).

For me the 5.3 is the pick of the bunch.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

There is an extra £20 off at Halfords at the moment on both of those Carreras. the Rockrider is probably the best of those though.

Alternatively, if looking second hand then as TB says, look at some men's bikes too.
