Looking in the near future to buy a fixed gear (single speed) track/road bike and really like the look of the Fuji Feather.
However, having made a couple of telephone calls recently the choice of colours and sizes is somewhat limited.
Perhaps I should custom build my own fixed gear sourcing similar components as used on the Fuji.
I will need a frame with horizontal "dropouts" with an adjustable screw to tension the chain.
Has anyone built their own fixed gear track/road bike and where is the best place to source the parts.

Frame wise you need to check it is drilled for brakes as to the forks

If you are going to use in at an indoor velodrome get a Manchester spec BB hight (google or ring Manchester velo)

Get some good brakes as riding a fixed on the road is like driving a car with the cruise control on, you can't freewheel to slow down so you need to brake, If you have experienced both examples you will now what I mean.

You only need a few components so you may have half of them in your spares box already.

The odd or track/fixed bits are shorter single cranks and a track rear wheel or a wheel set ( you can on the road use a front road wheel. The chain set will need a BB to suit so best to buy as a kit/set if you are not 100% sure what you need.

If you are using it on the road with good brakes I would stick with a strong pair of alloy rims you can have problems with carbon rims if they are designed for the track as the braking area does not have to be strong as you would not normally have brake blocks squeezed hard into this area. (hope you understand what I mean)

Handle bars and stem to suit your use and your body shape/size

Gearing wise probably start with 48 x 16 and see how it feels

As for where to buy google then the shopping tab and search you pays your money and takes your chances, here and velo riders along with ebay.
