Can't fit spacers, not enough space... help?

Hi there, I'm new to mountain biking but learning slowly. I need to adjust my handlebars to be taller, so went and bought some small spacers. I get the 'head set' off, and find there isn't enough 'pole' to have any spacers at all...
What can I do about this? I really like this bike, but its causing quite a lot of wrist pain now.
Any help appreciated! will attach a pic.

Darn, cheers guys, could I get a stem with a steeper angle?
Something like this?

Yes, but it needs to fit the steerer tube 1 1/8th and the bars you have got or the new ones.0

Ah I see, a bit more complicated than I thought then!
Thanks for the advice0 -

So would this one work?
thanks, how much extra height could I expect?

Definitely not the second one.
Just using a shorter stem would get you slightly more upright, if that is the aim.0 -
And you still need to work out the diameter of your bars. One stem you linked to is 31.8 and the other 25.4.I don't do smileys.

Thanks, I'll work out the diameter, my bike is an old Kona so should be fairly standard I hope!0

How much 'rise' do you have in your bars? A bigger rise may help... bars come in many shapes and sizes

OK then, my bar circumference is 7.5cm, so my diameter should be 2.39cm ...
Does that sound about right?0 -
Thereabouts. So 25.4.I don't do smileys.

Thanks for the idea, these are the handlebars that are on currently:
Which ones would you recommend to add a little hight so I can ride with less pressure on my wrists?
Thanks!0 -

So would this do it?
Ideally i would want to raise the grip hight by 2-3cm, as I'm 6ft, and currently the seat is higher than the handle bars ;p0 -
It would, but the saddles on all of my bikes are higher than the bars.

Ah, I haven't done much standing yet! Cheers0

Try moving the brakes/shifters around (downwards) a bit so when you sit on the bike your hands and fingers are inline with your arms. About 45 degrees down. That way you take the weight on your palms.
Yours look flat - twists your wrists and takes the weight on your wrists.
If that makes sense.I don't do smileys.

Only pic I can find of my bike but you can just see the brake lever - way down.I don't do smileys.

One of these will raise the steerer tube loads.

I would be very wary of doing anything exciting using that.I don't do smileys.

Well yes I agree if you put it at it's max height, but move the spacers too the top and the stem low down and it should be ok.0
-
The whole put though was to raise the stem, so you've just put it back where it started - class!
Would stick to something like

Do you just argue stuff for the sake of it or something? The whole idea of that raiser allows him to put a stem anywhere on the total height of it, spacers above, spacers below, spacers above and below.
I'm just giving an option that may or may not suit the op, you know just like that stem you linked too.0 -
Not at all, but you suggested a steerer extender as a way of raising the bars, when it was pointed out they were not to be trusted off road you suggested fitting a load of spacers above the stem moving it back down to a only a few mm above where it started (along with an unsightly lump above it), which suggests you perhaps didn't really think it out, whlst giving advice to someone to spend money......Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
