Can't say I've look around much but just wondered if there is a particular site you use for route planning that cuts out motorways and A roads or dual carriage ways that aren't suitable for riding.

I use Mapmyride to plan new rides, sticker on the top tube with main directions and record it with Strava. (I can't afford a Garmin!)

Try cyclestreets.net it can give a variety of routes including quite to avoid traffic (will use bridlepaths and footpath, advising you to walk the bike), to fastest which can include dual carriageways.
The website gives a route breakdown and an elevation guide, there's also a smart app (two in fact, one of which is for offline planning)

ridewithgps.com here, then export to Cyclemeter.

Used to use mapmyride to plan but anything longer than 30 miles didn't export as a GPX file correctly. Contacted them and they said it's a known issue with no timescale for resolution. Not much use!

www.bikeroutetoaster.com is pretty good. If you have Garmin, you can export the route to it as a .tcx file and get turn by turn instructions.

I just use the Garmin Connect course creator. Never had a problem with it.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

    Another fan of http://ridewithgps.com/

One tip, I've planned routes in the past using Google maps that most web sites default to, only to find the road had been closed years ago. Now I always plan the route then switch to Open Street Maps (OSM) to check it. This is easy using http://ridewithgps.com/ because you just drop down the list of maps and switch between them.

The two I rate are mapometer (really simple and your hand drawn routes will automatically follow the road) and Viewranger (let's you plot your routes in the app as well as the website)

+1 for ridewithgps.com I have tried a lot of sites and found this to be the best in IMO.
Great planning and routing. Transfer to garmin and upload and analysis too.
All available with the free account.

Created by cyclists who seem to have a real passion for the site.

I do check my routes on an O/S map after planning them online. I've had a few instances where I planned on ridewithgps which uses Google maps, only to find that the 'road' is in fact a stony track, or, worse, a private lane that I can't go down. I learnt to double check against a good old-fashioned paper map which shows these details. :)

I use Garmin connect but went out on a club ride last weekend who supplied a route with the bikeroutetoaster mappings. Have to say I thought it was excellent. Will be giving this another look.

+1 for BikeRouteToaster. I haven't had much like with downloading the tcx file directly to my Garmin 800, but the gpx file download works fine.
