    Dont think it matters really lol. But Peleton is a meaning for platoon in french and a platoon contains at least 26 people so 26? Maybe...

    What's the difference between an echelon, a peloton, a group and a bunch?

    Is it one of those all pelotons are groups but not all groups are pelotons?

    There's really no set number, and it'll depend on how many riders there are, and how they are spread out, or lumped together along the course.

    Peloton simply refers to the main body of riders sticking together.
    Got a place in the Pyrenees.
    Do bike and ski stuff.

    What about the leading bunch, the chasing bunch...and the gruppetto! How many riders constitute a gruppetto?!

    Well, an echelon is a formation.
    The peloton is the majority.

    It's to do with command structure and practical limitations of commanding people in combat - a platoon is commanded by a junior officer, consisting of several sections of men (usually 8 in the British Army) commanded by an NCO.

    The theory is that two to three dozen men is about the limit of what any one person can keep track of in the field, and command down through three of four NCOs.

    Peloton is where the number of riders is big enough such that you can hide in the wheels, not doing a turn on the front without anyone noticing or admonishing you.

    makes sense though... I'd say up to 20 is just a 'group' and 30 is definitely a peloton.. so the line has to be drawn somewhere!

    So we are just using platoon as the proxy for a peleton.. and we're saying 25 is not a peleton... 26 is.

    Perhaps you're not being serious, and it doesn't particularly concern me either, but if it's of any relevance to those interested, according to the Giro rules this year (to do with the combativity type prizes), a break isn't really a break if it contains more than 10 riders, then it's more a mini-peloton.

    The etymology may be more complicated again; "platoon" in French derives from "ball" which the French appear to have use for after the fashion that we use "clump." Whether the cycling use comes directly from the military useage or shares its origins with the military term...
