How to identify an old bike...?

My brother has offered me his old bike which he bought in early nineties second hand, he immediately gave it an amateur paint job and I can't remember what it was...
I think it was a decent bike as I remember him buying it from a real cycling enthusiast, I don't have the bike to hand yet (will collect in a couple of weeks) but any ideas if I'll be able to identify what it is / was before the paint job...?
e.g. would be possible to find out material of frame etc (Reynolds...).
I'm not too worried about what it is other than if it rides OK I would like to restore it in an authentic way.
Cheers.
