What Energy Food To Take?

If you want something that's 80%+ sugar but doesn't go rock hard in the cold like Kendal mintcake or melt in the heat like chocolate, marzipan is a good alternative.Viscount Grand Touring - in bits

I find that energy for a long ride starts the night before.
'Carbo-loading' is often heard, and IME it works. If you don't fancy something pasta, I'd have a pizza and garlic bread, with a salad.
Then in the morning, now my body has dealt with the night before, I'll have a bowl of porridge and head out. If I'm riding for less than three hours, I'll only take water. If I'm out for longer (all day) I'll take a museli bar and some peanut butter sarnies. And still only water - I'd only start hitting the electrolyte stuff if it was either baking hot or if I intended to be out for 12 hrs+ (longest active day out was 27hrs non-stop). Cost saving hint: blackcurrent Dioralyte sachets (much cheaper than any of the 'performance drink' stuff and more effective).
Please note, at all times there will be an 'emergency ration' squirreled away somewhere, but I never intend to eat it, so I don't count it in the above. How would I write my own epitaph? With a crayon - I'm not allowed anything I can sharpen to a sustainable point.

Just, remember to check it from time to time! My emergency flapjack was a bit green after it had been squirreled at the bottom of my bag for about a year... I still shudder at the memory of finding it...0 -

Jaffa cakes and bananas usually, but to be honest unless it is a major ride over about 30k then it's just something to snack on whilst we have a break abnd a chat. Ensuring appropriate hydration I find more important.0

Is it? They contain negligible sugars, so it's basically akin to a High 5 Zero/Nuun/Zym tablet, which are cheaper?0

dunno - never bought either!...use a free (from CRC?) High 5 or two once a year on an insane marathon event - there's so much lovely, cold, flowing mountain water 'round these parts dehydration is never a problem, even on all dayers"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

I think my liquid intake consists of a litre of energy drink...0

I find SIS gels (and their drinks actually) utterly vile! Different brands work for different people, so worth trying a few. I like High 5 drink and Torq gels, must say though I keep gels for racing generally, proper food when riding.0

As njee points out they are simply electrolyte replacements. They're intended to make you feel thirsty so that you keep drinking them. Downing a pint of water is not the same as staying hydrated. It takes time for the body to absorb the water and make use of it.
A little and often is the key.0
